Last year, it kept getting worse and worse. I’d seen somebody in high school for something else and he noticed it. Yeah, I had it in both feet, so it’s still on my right side. You’ve known you had Haglund’s deformity for a while, right? It was a good break, I think I definitely needed a little bit of time off. I’m excited to be healthy and back running again and to be here. I’m still just kind of inching my way up and doing a little bit more, building my mileage up, but everything’s as good as to be expected. Runner’s World caught up with Rupp, 33, about some of the details during a recent visit to the city-after he’d logged a 10-mile run, and before he headed to Wrigley Field to catch a Cubs game. In May, Chicago Marathon organizers announced that Rupp would return to the race this fall, suggesting his recovery was on track. So instead of toeing the line at Boston or London this spring, Rupp logged miles on an underwater treadmill, spent hours doing intense meditation, and-along the way-welcomed his fourth child.
The procedure involved temporarily detaching the Achilles tendon, smoothing the bone, and then re-attaching it. Alberto Salazar, his coach at the Nike Oregon Project, told the Oregonian a few days later that Rupp had surgery for Haglund’s deformity, a congenital defect involving an enlargement on the back of the heel bone. He claimed a silver medal in the 10,000 meters in 2012’s London Olympics, bronze in the marathon in Rio 2016, victory in the 2017 Chicago Marathon, and a personal-best 2:06:07 in the 2018 Prague Marathon, all without missing significant time for injury.īut last fall, 12 days after finishing fifth in the Chicago Marathon, Rupp found himself in the operating room.
